Important Considerations when Buying Household Insurance

You can buy general insurance in many different ways including direct from an insurance company, from an independent intermediary, a high-street shop, an advertisement, a bank or building society, personal introduction or mail shot.

People selling insurance must identify who they are and whether they are a 'company agent' for a limited number of insurers or an 'independent intermediary'.

Independent intermediaries are responsible for the advice they give and for arranging your insurance. They have agencies with a range of different insurance companies and recommend policies suitable to your needs. Their first duty is to you as their client.

When you buy direct from an insurer or through a company agent of the insurer, the insurer accepts responsibility for selling the policy. The policies must be suitable for your needs.

Insurers support a code of practice for selling a general insurance. Amongst other requirements, company staff and agents and independent intermediaries must do the following.

  1. Tell you that giving inaccurate answers or withholding information from the insurance company could result in the company not paying claims.
  2. Avoid influencing you. They must make it clear that the answers and statements you give in the proposal form are your responsibility.
  3. Where relevant, contact the insurance company for specialist advice.
  4. Give you all the documents you need relating to the insurance, including the policy and the insurer's renewal notice.
  5. Explain all the essential conditions of the insurance, important restrictions and exclusions to make sure the policy meets your needs.
  6. Understand and be ready to give prompt advice on claims procedures.
  7. Send to the insurance company, without delay, any information you provide concerning your claim.
  8. If they are an independent intermediary, tell you how much their commission is if you ask.
  9. Treat in confidence all information you give them.
  10. Make sure you know how to make a complaint.
