Important Considerations when Buying Horse & Rider Insurance

Why insure my Horse?

After a home and a car, a horse may be the next most expensive purchase that many people make and it is natural to want to protect your investment.

Illness, injury, theft or an accident can happen at any time and may result in unexpected bills. Accidents involving your horse may result in you being seriously injured or legally responsible to pay large amounts of compensation and legal bills. Insurance is designed to help reduce the worry of meeting these bills and ultimately means that you gain more enjoyment from your riding.

I don't own a horse but I ride often, do I need to own a horse in order to take out insurance?

No, this is a Horse & Rider policy and it covers both the horse and the rider, whether the horse you are riding belongs to you or someone else.  If you don't own the horse, you can choose to select any of the following covers; personal accident and dental cover, emergency vet fees, saddlery and tack, third party liability and trailer cover.

What insurance do I need?

Before purchasing insurance you should take the time to list your main areas of concern should you find yourself needing to make a claim.

For most horse owners, insurance for death, theft and legal liability is important. And now, with increasing levels of theft of both tack and trailers and the rising cost of veterinary fees due to advances in veterinary medicine and techniques, many owners opt to take out additional policy sections to protect against these costs.

If I apply for horse insurance, when does cover for my horse begin?

Cover for injury starts as soon as we receive your application. Cover for illness starts 14 days after your application date which, will appear on your Policy Schedule of Insurance.

What is a claim excess?

A claim excess is the amount that you pay towards the cost of treating each illness or injury during the period of cover and is not related to any other illness or injury treated during the same period of cover.

Are there any age restrictions on starting a new policy?

Allianz Horse and Rider will offer cover for horses from 30 days onwards. We do however limit the cover for older horses (aged 17 years and over), illness will not be covered and permanent loss of use cover will no longer be available.
