Floods In Ireland

What to do when a flood strikes

The last few years has seen an increase of floods in Ireland, which have had devastating effects on homes, businesses and communities. So it is important to be prepared and know what to do after disaster strikes. Here is some advice on what to do if your home or business premises have been hit by flooding.

Tip 1: Safety First

Firstly and most importantly take care of your own safety. Assume all power lines are live. Before re-entering your home get an expert to check the electricity, water, gas supply and heating system before you turn them back on,  as the damage caused by the flood may not be obvious and switching on any appliances such as this can be dangerous. And remember there may be structural damage; damp ceilings may collapse and damp floors may give way beneath you.

Tip 2: Disinfect and Dispose

Secondly, when the floodwater has receded, the house and its contents will need to be disinfected.

You should boil all drinking water or use bottled water and throw away any food in your fridge and freezer as it may be contaminated. Also take care not to expose yourself to any water that you believe has been exposed to rats as you may be at risk to Weil’s disease.

Tip  3 – Ventilate Your Property

Thirdly, Open doors and windows to ventilate the house but take care to ensure your house and valuables are secure.

Tip 4: Take photos

Try to take photos of the damage to your property and its contents. Be sure not to throw away any damaged items you wish to claim for, as they might need to be assessed.

Tip 5: Call your insurer

Contact your home insurer as soon as possible. If you have Allianz home insurance with flood cover you can call their 24 hour Helpline on 1890 48 48 48 and their trained staff will deal with your urgent enquiries.

Also be sure to get approval from your insurance company before any work is carried out. For more information and advice refer to your allianzweathersafe.com
