What is Renter’s Insurance?

With a large number of renters in the Irish market, there’s a growing need for renter’s insurance. However, research conducted by Red C Research in January 2019 on behalf of Allianz* has found that only 9% of people renting currently have insurance. With 91% of renters currently uninsured, how does renter’s insurance work, and is it really necessary?
What People Believe Renters Insurance Is
The research found that a remarkable 65% of respondents didn’t know what renter’s insurance was. 5% believed that it protects the renter against a landlord (e.g. against eviction), while another 3% believed the insurance protects the landlord against the renter (e.g. against damage to the property).
What Is Renter’s Insurance?
In a basic sense, renter’s insurance is a simpler form of home insurance that primarily covers your contents. If you took all of your belongings out of your home that you own to move, these things are your contents. With renter’s insurance, your contents are covered against fire, storm, flood, theft, and burglary.
But your possessions aren’t the only thing that’s protected. If a visitor injures themselves in your home, you maybe covered for any liability that may arise. But that’s not all; you also get up to 4 Emergency Home Assistance callouts per year at no extra cost in case you’ve lost your keys and are locked out of your home or a pipe bursts. This service is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
A €250 standard excess applies to claims.Escape of water and subsidence may have a higher excess.
How Do I Get Renter’s Insurance?
To get renter’s insurance, simply visit our website and fill in your details - it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes! Before you start a quote, give some time to placing a value on your contents. It’s really important to be as accurate as you can. You will only be covered for the sum of contents that you provide.
After your renter’s insurance policy is active, if you are planning on buying the latest and greatest smartphone or splurging on that designer bag you’ve had an eye on, it is important to regularly review the value of your contents to make sure you continue to have adequate cover.
For a higher premium each month, you can also protect items like jewellery or your phone outside of the home, as well as get cover for accidental damage to your possessions
Each item is insured for up to €2,000 with no excess.
Is Renter’s Insurance Necessary?
As your landlord’s insurance policy won’t cover your contents, is it important that you do. With sky-high rent prices in some parts of Ireland, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself against a significant financial loss. This is especially true of families, who may have multiple tablets or phones in the home for each member of the family, as well as toys and gadgets. Our research found that while 22% of people rent with their partner, 27% are renting with their partner and children.
