Sebastian Vettel Wins Frenetic Hungarian GP

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel recorded his second win of the season with victory at the Hungarian GP on Sunday.

The former world champion took the lead early in the first lap and held on to the end, ignoring all the excitement taking place behind him at the Hungaroring.

It was the German’s 41st Grand Prix victory, equalling Ayrton Senna in third place on the all-time list, with just Alain Prost (51) and Michael Schumacher (91) ahead of him.

Vettel dedicated his victory to Marussia driver Jules Bianchi, who died last week after months in a coma following a crash in the Japanese GP last year.

“Thank you, Jules. This victory is for you,” he said.

“You will always be in our hearts. We know sooner or later you would have been in this team.”

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton finished sixth, two places ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, who suffered a late puncture.

Hamilton now leads Rosberg by 21 points in the standings.

Red Bull pair Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo finished second and third, with the Australian claiming a podium place after an eventful race.

Ricciardo said he “left it all on the track” for Bianchi after being slowed down by three separate incidents at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Ricciardo collided with Valtteri Bottas at the start, then clipped both Mercedes drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, later in the race.

“It was a crazy race,” Ricciardo said.

“There was contact in Turn 1 – I thought there was a lot of damage and I thought the race was over. Then there was contact on the restart with Lewis – I thought the race was probably over – and then contact with Nico as well.

“But we were resilient today, I left it all on the track, I put my heart into everything and I think that’s the way Jules would have wanted it. So I owe that race to him and I’m very grateful to be on the podium.”
