June 13th, 2016

Following on from a busy April, May saw lots of fun in the sun for our Allianz “Elmpark Bake-off” – to find out how much we raised (we are proud as punch) have a read about National Tea Day below. There was a big focus on Mental Wellbeing in May with the official launch of our Wellbeing Champions and visits from Afresh and Donal Scanlon from Mental Health First Aid. We also had a whopping 17 teams take part in the Dublin Staff Relay on May 19th in the Phoenix Park.

National Tea Day

National Tea Day

We are thrilled to have continued our relationship with the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland as our Designated Charity of the Year. Here at Allianz we recognise that the Alzheimer Society of Ireland means so much to people with Alzheimer’s and their loved ones and that the National Tea Day is their single biggest fundraising event of the year. We were very lucky that the sun was shining on the 5th May for National Tea Day with we hosted “The Elmpark Bake-off” with Willis Towers Watson and the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland. Clodagh McKenna, author of five best-selling cookery books and former world champion hurdler turned author Derval O Rourke were our guest judges on the day, the standard of baking was very high and they had a difficult task ahead of them.  Clodagh and Derval tasted the delicious treats cooked by the Alzheimer’s Society, Allianz and Willis Towers Watson employees in a bid to choose a winner for the 3 baking categories 1. Cup Cake Category, 2. Tray Bake Category or 3. Big Cake Category. The turnout on the day was fantastic and people were very generous with a grand total of €2514.62 being raised in 2 hours for the Alzheimer’s Society! Employees were also treated to a cooking demonstration with Clodagh McKenna in the afternoon which was great fun, she shared some clever tips and her Clodagh bread went down a treat – the perfect end to a fantastic day!

Wellbeing Champions

Wellbeing Day

As you will remember in April, our Wellbeing Champions attended the first round of Mental Health First Aid Training in Saint John of God Hospital, delivered by Mental Health First Aid. The Wellbeing Champions have now completed their final training course in May and on Monday 16th May; we had the official launch of our Active and Aware Wellbeing Champions.

Donal Scanlan from Mental Health First Aid was in attendance on the day to introduce the concept to us and highlighted the importance of looking after our Mental Wellbeing. Donal also spoke to us about how to create an environment where we are positive about our own and others wellbeing.

We continued to run Mindfulness Classes throughout the month of May and they will run into June.

Considerable focus is being placed on positive mental health in society at the moment and we look forward to developing this initiative in Allianz over the coming months and years with the help of our Wellbeing Champions.

On Tuesday 10th May Afresh visited Allianz to give a talk on ‘Work life Merge’. This term was recently coined by Facebook executive Emily White to describe a life in which work and free time are no longer neatly compartmentalised but seamlessly jumbled up together. It was interesting for employees to hear about this new, unique approach to the ‘work v’s life’ balance that is widely recognised.

Dublin Staff Relay

Staff Relay

May 19th saw 85 members of Team Allianz head to the Phoenix Park to take part in the Dublin Staff Relay, a 25 kilometre relay race with teams of 5 completing 5 kilometres each. With over 5,000 teams taking part it was a very competitive field. Our colleagues at Allianz World Wide Care were the first across the line in an impressive 1:48:39.

The end of May finished on an inspiring note with an hour long workshop for employees on the theme ‘Building Work Life Resilience Workshops: Be ready to bounce back’. The two workshops provided employees with the ability to adopt positive behaviours around lifestyle choices and created a mind-set which will ensure that when faced with these challenges they will be able to bounce back stronger having learnt from their experiences.

May was an exciting month for Allianz – here’s hoping the sun sticks around for all the other fun activities we have coming up over the summer!
