Allianz Ireland Home Insurance - Top Tips for Moving House

by Melanie May | July 2022

Moving house can be very stressful with people often getting overwhelmed with all there is to do before, during and after the move. However, there are plenty of ways to reduce the stress and lighten the load. The key is preparation.

If you don't know where to start, don't worry. We’re here to help! So, make a cuppa, take a deep breath, and have a read of our top tips for moving house.

Pace yourself!

Moving day is a big deal and it can be both physically and mentally exhausting. So, take it easy and don't rush. Have a moving day checklist and a survival kit — cold drinks in the fridge, tea/coffee at the ready and snacks to keep the energy up. Make sure you fuel up with a big breakfast and stop for a decent lunch too.

Call in the professionals

If you can afford to do so, use professional movers. Professional movers know the best packing and moving techniques to keep your precious cargo safe. Professional movers provide a safe, fast and efficient service, which can help ease your mind on moving day.

Rent a suitable van

If you are doing the move yourself, without the help of the professionals, try to get a few trustworthy — and strong — friends to help you. When it comes to renting a van, try to find one that comes with a ramp and trolley, which will make transporting heavy and awkward

Enjoy the process

Though packing can seem awfully stressful, unpacking can be quite therapeutic bringing with it feelings of opportunity and new beginnings.

Start with the essentials

If you have the luxury of time, try to clean each room before you start unpacking, but if not, you can just clean as you go along.

Start with the boxes labelled essentials and then move on to the kitchen. Get the big and most frequently used appliances all hooked up and just get things put away — you can come back and fully organise the presses and drawers at a later time.

Do one room at a time

It’s a good idea to unpack one room at a time, starting with the rooms you want to use most quickly, for example, the kitchen or the living room. There is no need to unpack everything, just set up the room so that you can use it for the first few days. Leave non-urgent items in the boxes until you’ve decided on furniture layout and have done any necessary decorating.

About one week before you move into your new home, contact your home insurance provider to change over your policy. Inform your insurer of the new address so the buildings and contents insurance can be updated and a new policy issued.

Before you move, check your home insurance policy to see what, if anything, is covered whilst moving house. For example, if you have household insurance with Allianz, we will pay the cost of loss or damage to contents whilst in the course of removal by a professional furniture removal contractor.
