Easter Camps: What Schools Need to Know About Insurance Coverage
Spring is here, and with it comes the Easter break— a time for blooming flowers, chocolate eggs, and school closures. While the break from school brings joy, it can also leave families wondering how to keep their children active and engaged. Easter Camps have become a popular solution, offering fun and learning for kids during the break.
But what about insurance cover for these camps? If your school is planning to run a camp this year, here’s a quick quide to help you understand how insurance cover work under you Allianz Schools policy.
School-run easter camps: now covered for free under Allianz School Protection Policy
Good news for schools! If the Board of Management (BoM) is fully responsible for running the Easter Camp, these activities can now be covered for free under the Allianz School Protection Policy. However, if the camp involves one of the following activities, you will need to contact Allianz to confirm cover; Mountaineering and rock climbing necessitating the use of ropes and guides, abseiling, skiing, parascending, shooting, snorkelling, pot holing and caving, skin-diving, ice skating, archery, BMX Activities, canoeing, horse riding or Inflatables - Bouncing Castles/Slides/Obstacle Courses
To arrange cover including one of the above activities you must submit the following details:
- Location and dates of the camp
- Types of activities planned (e.g., academic, sports, accommodation)
- Presence of inflatable elements (e.g., bouncy castles)
- Supervisor-to-child ratios (as per Department of Education guidelines)
- Total number of pupils attending
- Confirmation that all attendees are on the school roll
- Assurance that a comprehensive risk assessment will be conducted
Once we receive this information, we’ll review your proposal and confirm cover if approved. All Cover is subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.
Third-Party-Run Easter Camps: Insurance Responsibility
If a third party- including teachers acting independently- is running the Easter Camp and the school is only providing the premises, the Allianz School Protection Policy cannot extend to cover these activities. In this case, the third party must arrange their own insurance.
For such arrangements, the School BoM should:
Ensure the third party has valid insurance and request an indemnity letter to protect the school.
Draft an agreement outlining the responsibilities of both parties (Diocesan Office or your Management Body may have a template if your School do not have one).
Require the third party to inspect and confirm the premises are fit for purpose.
Obtain written confirmation that the third party has adequate safeguarding procedures in place (but do not request a copy of the safeguarding policy, per National Safeguarding Office advice).
Ultimately, it is the school’s decision whether to allow third-party use of its premises.
