The policyholder has passed away. What should I do?

 

At Allianz we understand that losing a loved one is a heart-breaking experience that can make what appears to be the simplest administrative task difficult. So, we are here to help, if you are the next of kin, executor, or estate administrator you may need to organise the affairs of the deceased, this includes the insurance of the deceased’s home, car, and or pet(s).

Here at Allianz we will support you through this insurance journey. We have compiled some of the essential information you might need below. The type of policy your loved one has with Allianz will determine the documentation we require. We have outlined below some of the options available to you for your home, car or pet.

If a policy is paid by direct debit from the deceased customers bank account an alternative payment method may need to be organised. Our customer team will be able to confirm the current payment method in place and update it if necessary. Allianz Instalment Billing on 01 613 3909 - Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Once you have decided on the approach that best suits your circumstances or if you are concerned about the cover in any way, please contact our customer service team – Allianz Direct on 01 448 4848 - Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm or Saturday 9am to 1pm.

All refunds and claims will be paid in the representatives of the late insured. This means the administrator or executor can lodge this refund or claim into the dedicated account opened for this purpose.

Temporary additional drivers for the funeral period

We understand that the family may need to add drivers to the deceased customers policy for the days prior and week following the insureds funeral. Simply call us and we can add these drivers. Please note this is subject to our acceptance criteria.

Cancel or Transfer of the Policy

You can cancel the insurance policy if the car has been sold or if the spouse/partner decides to insure the car in their own name. We will transfer any applicable no claims discount or driving experience to the new policy. Refunds will be issued by cheque in the representative of the late insured within 5 business days following the date chosen. 

Continue with the current policy

You can continue with the current policy until the next renewal date. This means that any drivers named on the policy will still be covered to drive the car until that date. The named drivers will continue to earn named driver experience during this time. 

Suspend the policy

You can suspend the policy keeping fire and theft cover in place. During this time no one would be insured to drive the car and at the next renewal date we will issue a refund for any over payment.

Removing a deceased joint insured 

You can remove a deceased joint insured from a policy. We will update the contract and issue the amendment.

Family member is taking ownership of pet

You can transfer ownership of the pet to a family member with no change to the cover. We will update the owner details and collect alternative payment information to reflect the new ownership. If you are not in a position to do this please contact out team and we can discuss the potential options available. 

Cancel the policy 

You can cancel the policy with immediate effect or for a future date. Refunds will be issued by cheque in the representative of the late insured within 5 business days following the date chosen.

Removing a deceased joint insured 

You can remove a deceased joint insured from a policy. Simply call us and we can update the policy.

For all other requests 

We recognise that home insurance may be required for some time following the insureds passing. Please contact our customer service team to discuss all the options that are available and what documents are necessary to amend the policy. A list of these documents are outlined below. If you are not able to supply any of the documents, please make our team aware and we will discuss the options available to you. 

Once probate is complete, the policy can be set up in the name of the new legal owner, subject to our acceptance criteria.

Situation Preferred Documentation
There is a will, and an executor appointed/has not yet been appointed.

A copy of the Grant of Probate 

or 

A copy of the solicitors' letter confirming executor status 

And 

a copy of the Executor ID

The insured has passed away without a will and an administrator has been appointed or has yet to be appointed.

A copy of the Grant of Representation 

Or 

A copy of the solicitors' letter confirming administrator status 

And

a copy of the Administrator ID

If the deceased has not left a will and if the family member decides not to use a solicitor.

The family member can make a personal application to administer the estate through a self-application process. We then require a copy of the Grant of Representation.
