When you make a claim, an excess is the initial amount you need to pay towards the claim, and this is deducted from the total amount you receive from the claim.

Our standard policy excess for veterinary fee claims is €100, other voluntary excesses are available. Our standard policy for excess 3rd party property claims is €350. Alternative excesses are also available. No excess applies to 3rd party injury claims, boarding & kennels claims, theft and straying claims, holiday cancellation claims, or death claims.

The excess must be paid by you for each separate illness or injury that is treated during the Policy Year. If the treatment for the same condition falls within 2 different policy years, you pay an excess for each year.

You may have to pay an additional percentage amount on veterinary fees claims as your pet gets older.

This percentage is shown on your schedule of insurance if it applies.

Please refer to your schedule of insurance, policy booklet, or contact us directly if you wish to query these amounts.

Yes. We offer a preauthorisation service for treatment estimated to be over €500. If your pet needs surgery or costly treatment such as an MRI, you can ask your vets to submit a preauthorisation to us. What we require for this is;

  • A completed pre- authorisation form
  • An itemised estimate of the treatment needed (this should be from the vets carrying out the procedure)
  • Your pet's full clinical history

You can find a copy of our pre- authorisation form, here and this can be submitted to us by email at [email protected] using your policy number as the subject line.

Once we receive the above items we aim to review your preauthorisation within 48 hours.

Yes. A 35% age deduction applies to all claims for veterinary treatment for;

  • Dogs from 7 years old
  • Cats from 10 years old

Once your pet turns this age, as well as the excess, a 35% age deduction will apply to claims. We will cover 65% of the treatment after the excess.

Yes! We offer lifetime cover for your pets, if the illness or injury/ clinical signs were not pre-existing or noticed within the first 14 days of your policy starting. Once we cover for a condition once, we will then continue to offer cover for the treatment of this illness/injury once your renew your policy every year with no gap in cover. Examples of this include treatment for arthritis, skin conditions, heart conditions, diabetes etc.

We do, however, need a claim form for each time you claim for this condition. This can me yearly, monthly or you can claim as you go.

The method of treatment (monthly injections, tablets etc) is based on what your vet recommends as best for your pet. You can find the pet policy document here which further details what we will and will not cover.

Settlement can be made by cheque or bank transfer.

You can advise us of your preferred payment method in section 8 of the claim form.

If you pay for your policy by direct debit, we will pay your settlement directly into this account, unless otherwise specified on the claim form.

If we do not have bank details, a cheque will be issued. When the policy is in joint names, a cheque will be issued in both names unless the joint policyholders have noted otherwise on the claim form.

If your vet agrees, Allianz can also pay your vet directly. This is at the discretion of veterinary practice.

Food is not covered under the pet policy, including food prescribed by a vet, except where it is used to dissolve bladder stones and crystals in urine (and then only for a period of 3 months after the condition has been diagnosed).

Since a "second opinion" is essentially a consultation with a different veterinarian, it is generally covered under the Veterinary Fees section of your policy, up to your annual maximum benefit.

However, keep these important points in mind:

  1. Treatment Must Be Necessary: The cost of the consultation or diagnostic test must be part of the necessary treatment for an insured injury or illness.
  2. Pre-Authorisation: If the second opinion is part of a series of very expensive treatments, or a referral, it is a good idea to submit a pre-authorisation claim form to Allianz first to confirm the cover.
  3. Claims Process: You will need to submit a claim form along with the invoices from the second vet to be reimbursed, subject to your policy of excess and any co-payment that applies based on your pet's age.

Important Note on Allianz's Right to an Opinion:

The policy documents explicitly state that Allianz themselves reserve the right to request an "independent opinion" from a vet they choose if:

  • The fees charged are higher than usual.
  • They consider the treatment excessive or unnecessary.

This refers to their right to investigate a claim, but it does not restrict your right to seek a second opinion from a vet of your own choosing.

Recommendation: Always check your specific Policy Schedule and Policy Document for the exact terms, conditions, and limits on your veterinary fees to cover. If you are unsure, contact Allianz Ireland directly before incurring the cost of the second opinion.

Unfortunately, we can’t give cover confirmation over the phone. You can claim for treatment after it has been carried out.

For treatments costing over €500, you can submit a pre-authorisation form to us. This is not mandatory to do.

You can also find the pet policy document here which further details what we will and will not cover.

No, pre-existing conditions or illnesses which show clinical signs within the first 14days of the policy are not covered.
